I had to complete a one-word film project for my Aice media studies class. The directions consisted of getting assigned a word and working with it to create a film withing 1-2 minutes long, expressing the word in a chronological format. We had to storyboard our film before executing it, planning out the different shots/angles and meaning behind each scene. We had to have at least 15 shots on paper and were allowed to add more as we felt necessary when we started filming. We then had to edit our film together and use at least 2 editing techniques that we learned in a class presentation.
My partner and I thought out our scene before even drawing anything, once we had a solid thought about a story we started drawing each scene. We carefully thought out each angle and the meaning it would convey to the viewer as our teacher taught us to do so. We wrote down each angle and camera movement along with the drawing. We then assigned roles and got to filming. We had the opportunity to film outside, so we used a bench and paper as props.
During the brainstorming my partner and I communicated a lot on different ideas and considered each other ideas thoroughly, making sure we pick the one that would best benefit our filming. We drew each angle as best as possible trying to include facial expressions when possible. My storyboard helped us a lot in remembering what camera tilts or pans to use and when as well as what shots to use. We came up with the best ideas out of both of us and wrote them down, so we constantly were looking back at our storyboard sheet as reference on what to do next. Since we got distracted with filming it was hard to remember all of the shots, so the brainstorming helped a lot in the long run. Our editing resources were iMovie. I looked up a couple videos using YouTube on how to use certain thing on iMovie to aid me in my work since I'm aware I'm not educated on editing yet at all.
I think my partner and I did well with accurately representing the different angles we had in mind and using creativity with props and changing levels: sitting down halfway through the film so we weren't standing the whole time. I believe we did well representing emotion through facial expression and the body language we decided to use. The one big thing I know I need to improve is my editing skills- more specifically, transitions.
