Genre research

Why is romance so loved?

A typical target audience of romance films are heterosexual middle-aged females. General conventions are a relationship formed between two people throughout the film, a love triangle, a happy ending, and a pattern of anticipation, tension, and release. The Institutional aspects are usually associated with the marketing techniques of posters or thumbnails with the two main love interests in love posing together like they love each other, drawing in that audience that searches for romance films. These films are marketed either using the relationship drama in the trailer or specific actors they know an audience would love to see together. Examples of these films are “anyone but you” “After” “It ends with us "and so on.

Sydney sweeney being a rising actor along with Glenn Powell was a great move to have them act together in a rom com.

This film “anyone but you” are a sub-genre of romance. It is a rom com. Yet it embodies romance perfectly since the audience can see this “boy meets girl” convention of production that is executed and developed throughout the film. Th audience can watch their tension build up with occasional comedy relief. It is marketed with many thumbnails are the two actors looking either in love or annoyed with each other, marketing this movie as a push and pull love story. The cloths Sydney wear are all light floral colors to give that extra feminine aspect about her.  The guy is chasing her most of the movie making viewers anticipate when she will finally give in.

The notebook is another great example of a romance movie. The plot is yet again “guy meets girl” and “guy chases girl” story line. They make specific production choices like using whether to help convey intense emotion in the most important dramatic scene. This is a key feature that helps people remember and associate with the movie. They add rain to their thumbnail to make it even more memorable and help the audience have an association to the movie. The story shows how their relationship develops and all the problems and how they get resolved. In the end the main characters end up together, leaving the viewers satisfied and rewatching it. The actors are also very popular, the actress being the lead mean girl in the movie “mean girls” and the lead actor being Ryan gosling, a well-loved celebrity. This draws people to watch the movie because of their love for the actors.

Some other examples of romance movies are, “The idea of you” “after” “deep water” “float” “titanic” “la la land” and “Pretty women”

Sound project reflection

I learned about foley artists and how they use creativity to create the full sound for films. I learned about how much trial-and-error foley sounds take and how much of an open mind you must have to create them. I learned how to put sounds together and layer them to make them sound as realistic as possible as well as defining each sound to create a story with just sound alone.

For my project, we were required to make a 1-2-minute-long film using just sound. We were only allowed a black screen or one still image. Only 7 words are allowed to be used in the film so any music must be wordless. We had to create a chronological film with a storyline start to finish within the time span given, using sounds alone. We were required to make 4 of the sounds ourselves as foley sounds. We had to make a list of scenes and what sounds we would use for those scenes on a piece of paper to get started.

I approached this project by first making my list of scenes and sounds. I'm thinking to make sure I could accurately create my story. I then thought out which 4 sounds i could make foley sounds out of. Once I had my layout, I got to film the 4 foley sounds with my partner. Then, I went on an editing app as we were allowed to use any of our choice and used sites my teacher provided to gather the sounds i needed. I Did overlap, volume adjusting, and cutting to make sure everything lined up and you could hear the sounds you needed to, and background sounds were quieter than the main ones.

I believe I layered sounds very well to create a realistic environment. I also faded out the sounds I used for outside when my main subject opened a door to go inside, you could hear as she steps inside the restaurant the sounds of mind and rain fade away and the sounds of people talking and eating fade in. I think I could have improved my foley sounds. I struggled with being creative with the foley sounds. I could have been more creative if I had watched more video examples.
